SkyVenture NH, Nashua, NH

Until now, the experience of body flight has been reserved for the few who were willing and able to leap from a plane at high altitude. Now, SkyVenture NH brings this experience to anyone willing to put on goggles and a jump suit, and take a leap into a high-velocity vertical air stream.

SkyVenture NH, completed in the fall of 2006, is a vertical wind tunnel, capable of wind speeds in excess of 180 mph. The advanced design of laminar airflow movement within the tunnel, as provided by the placement of four 300-horsepower fan motors located at the upper level of the tower, provides a smooth ride for beginner and advanced body flyer alike.

The project's technical complexities, not the least of which was gaining the site and building permit approvals for such a unique structure, were many. The primary building structural steel framework was being fabricated in Florida, the fan motors were manufactured in Chicago, and multiple electrical components were coming in from Texas and elsewhere around the globe. The overall tunnel assembly procedure and human interface building were designed and constructed by Stenbak Design Associates. The unique design evolved from multiple attempts to meet both project pricing and delivery specifications. Interestingly, the tunnel's working elements were commissioned much like a submarine on test runs, over a period of two weeks, and final touches completed shortly thereafter.

This tunnel design is unique, it is only one of three recirculating wind tunnels found in the world, and provides for a risk-free skydiving experience.
