C.A.V.E.S.

The Capitol Area Veterinary Emergency Services hospital, known as CAVES around Concord, NH, provides emergency and specialty animal care and surgical services to north-central New Hampshire. Stenbak Design Associates has worked with CAVES since 1996 when the hospital was first built in a mill building near the Concord central business district.

Planning for a new facility was begun in 2002, with the recognition that population growth in this region can easily support a first class emergency and specialty animal medicine facility. Stenbak Design provided initial evaluation of programs, and worked through the demanding process of building a facility on the wetland edge of the Merrimack River. The planning issues involved local, state and federal review and approvals which were obtained in late 2007. The design and construction management of this $4 million project was completed by Stenbak Design in 14 months.

The facility is state of the art in every regard, with a significant investment is a ground loop geothermal heating and cooling system, day lighting within the building, energy conservation measures incorporated throughout, while maintaining a New England visual character. The building was completed in 2008, and has gained attention for the natural setting on what was at one time considered an unbuildable site.
